  Let me tell you a story about my run in with the police in Florida in 2011. I went down with my car and camper that I built. My goal was to stay on or near a beach somewhere. I found this most excellent beach in a place called Huchinson Island. I went there and set up my camper, opened up the back and put the coffee on. Then a sheriff and his partner show up and tell me I can't camp there but there is a walmart up the road that I can camp. Then they want to have a look inside my camper. This could have turned out much different if I showed attitude, but I didn't. I let them look and said "ok, have a look, but when you are done, have a coffee with me". They said Ok. When they were done poking around, they came to the back of the camper and we had coffee and the sun was setting. It was such a beautiful night. They got off shift and came back....and were toting a 6 pack of cold beers. We each had 2 and traded stories well into the night. As they were leaving they said "don't worry about leaving, you can camp here for the night. I live on that beach for 4 months out of the 6 I was down there. The sheriffs showed up almost every night. Sometimes it would be the first 2 that searched my camper and car and sometimes it would be other pairs. I got to know the whole sheriff department, of whom I still call my friends and they are welcome at my place in Nova Scotia anytime. And, they were generous and fun. Sometimes they would show up with steaks and insist that I BBQ them, (I am pretty good on a BBQ) and sometimes show up with beers. Cool thing was, I had my own personal body guards as they would peruse the beach a couple times a night. Sometimes they would bang on my camper at 6 or 7 in the morning and tell me to put the coffee on. So what I learned about police and sheriffs is that you get treated depending on your attitude. Sure, there are some idiots out there, but most are just down to earth, good cops and people. During my time there I got to know them so well, I was invited to some of their homes for BBQ's etc and even taught one of their kids how to SCUBA dive. I did lots of surfing and ate great food. That was one of my best trips I ever have done. Thanks Huchinson Island Sheriff dept. I hope I can meet you again one day. If any of you ever want to come up and go fishing, drop me a note.
